Voluntary Manufacturer Takeback Programs
Best Buy Expands Electronics Recycling – The electronics retail giant just announced broadening its e-waste take back program to all its U.S. stores. This makes good on a commitment the company agreed to work toward after an As You Sow shareholder proposal and dialogue last year led to a take back pilot project at 100+ stores in three regions. Starting February 15, 2009, most electronics will be accepted for free but items like TVs and older CRT monitors will be charged a $10 fee (does not apply in CA). The fee will be offset by a $10 gift certificate.
Panasonic, Sharp and Toshiba have announced that their takeback program will have 280 sites in all 50 states by the end of January 2009.
